Understanding the reports

Allocation trade volume snapshot - national summary

This report provides the total number and volume of water allocations traded in Australia for the selected reporting period. The trades reported are based on approved trades and include allocations that are traded in full or in part.

The information is aggregated by state and territory and grouped by intrastate A transaction to transfer a water right from one legal entity to another within the same state or territory.  and interstate A transaction to transfer a water right from one legal entity to another between different states or territories.  trade.

The aim of the report is to show the breakdown in the number and volume of allocation trades conducted in each state and territory, including whether the water is traded into or out of the jurisdiction. Any known issues in the data reported are highlighted in the footnotes at the end of the report. The footnotes generally apply to all reports unless specified otherwise.

In order to avoid duplication in the total trades count, only the outbound trades (trade out) are included in the calculation because an inbound trade for one state (or location) is an outbound trade in another state (or location). A similar rule is also applied for the pooled trades in Victoria where only the allocation trades between the seller and the pool are reflected in the report (i.e. the trades between the buyer and the pool are excluded).

Note that the term 'allocation' is used in the national context to refer to 'water allocation' and may vary across jurisdictions. The mapping of national terms to jurisdiction specific terms can be found in report terminology.

Allocation trade price snapshot - national summary

This report provides the net prices The transfer price of water as agreed between legal entities exclusive of all applicable transaction costs.  of water allocations in Australia for the selected reporting period, with a breakdown for each state and territory. The trades reported are based on approved trades and include allocations that are traded in full or in part. Trades for which the price is not known or not reported have been excluded from the report to improve the quality of the data, hence the trade volume presented in the price report may be different to the trade volume presented in the trade volume report.

The report shows the highest, lowest and volume weighted average price (VWAP) per megalitre (ML) of water allocation trades reported by the states and territories for the reporting period. The national summary is an average of these prices. The formulas used for calculating prices are shown below:

All prices reported are net price, meaning the price of water excluding any transaction costs. Any known issues in the data reported are highlighted in the footnotes at the end of the report. The footnotes generally apply to all reports unless specified otherwise.

Trade prices provided are as reported by data suppliers, and may include ‘outliers’ (i.e. prices that are significantly higher or lower than the average) which affect the average trade price displayed. In order to achieve as close as possible to a ‘true’ average, this web site uses a volume weighted average price, whereby the individual contribution to the average price made by each sale is weighted proportionally by the volume of water involved in the transfer. This information is intended to increase market transparency and allow for more informed water trading decisions. It is, however, the responsibility of each individual trader to conduct their own market research, and to make informed trading decisions based on a range of available resources.

Note that the term ‘allocation’ is used in the national context to refer to ‘water allocation’ and may vary across jurisdictions. The mapping of national terms to jurisdiction specific terms can be found in report terminology.

The diagram below describes the details within the main report content. For guidance on other parts of the report, refer to the report layout. For guidance on navigating between the different report views, refer to How to navigate inside the report.

Please note that we currently do not have a corresponding allocation trade price trend report at the national level.

Entitlement trade volume snapshot - national summary

This report provides the total number and volume of water access entitlements traded in Australia for the selected reporting period. The trades reported are based on registered entitlement trades and include entitlements that are traded or leased in full or in part.

The information is aggregated by state and territory and grouped by intrastate A transaction to transfer a water right from one legal entity to another within the same state or territory.  and interstate A transaction to transfer a water right from one legal entity to another between different states or territories.  trade.

Note that an interstate entitlement trade is the trade of an entitlement from one legal entity to another between different states or territories. The ownership changes but the original characteristics of the entitlement are retained.

The aim of the report is to show the breakdown in the number and volume of entitlement trades conducted in each state and territory, including transfers of entitlement ownership going into or out of the state or territory (interstate trades). Any known issues in the data reported are highlighted in the footnotes at the end of the report. The footnotes generally apply to all reports unless specified otherwise.
