Trading in your state/territory

Northern Territory

The regulatory framework for water management and planning, including water trading in the Northern Territory is established through the Water Act 2009 (NT).

To date there have been no water trades within the Northern Territory. For an intrastate trade, the seller and buyer must both complete a paper form and submit them to the Department of Natural Resources, Environment, the Arts and Sport (NRETAS). The trade is assessed by the department and then made available to the public for comment for 30 days. If deemed appropriate, the trade is approved and recorded in the register.

Further information including fact sheets about the water trading process in the Northern Territory are available on the NRETAS web site .
